Probus originated
in the UK in 1965. It was established by Rotary to provide social
activities for
retired people.
The name is derived from PRO (Professional)
and BUS (Business). It was introduced into Australia in 1976.
Probus has filled a need for today's active retirees, so much so that
the growth has been phenomenal.
It is now a world-wide movement.
Probus is one of the fastest growing organisations
of this nature worldwide.
In Australia alone there are 1782 clubs with 138,269 members.
In New Zealand there are 456 clubs with 45,885 members.
The
basic purpose of Probus clubs is to provide regular opportunities for
members to keep their minds active, expand their interests and to enjoy
the fellowship of new friends.
Probus is not a service or fundraising organization.
It has no political or religious affiliations.
